Soil salinity is the principal factor affecting the productivity of farms in the Tragowel Plains Irrigation Area of northern Victoria. This was the major finding from a preliminary study completed prior to the development of a Salinity Management Plan for the area. Results of this study also indicated the need to accurately measure soil salinity levels on individual farms, ensuring the implementation of appropriate farm management. The electromagnetic induction technique, using an EM38, has been successfully employed for this purpose. The role of the EM38 in the Tragowel Plains Irrigation Area is described, leading to its use as a farm management tool for identifying the less saline and more productive soils.
