A manual is provided for involvement of the community, from farmers to school children, in a programme of monitoring water district water tables as a part of a broad programme to control irrigated and dryland salinisation in the Murray Basin. The hydrology of groundwater is outlined, as it applies to Victoria generally and the Shepparton region in particular. The interaction between groundwater levels and salinisation is explained. The programme is centred on the establishment of simple test wells, and their establishment and use are illustrated. A manual is included for the use of software for the collection and contribution of test well data to support analysis and mapping throughout the State
