The long term results of soil moisture in heavy soils of the Vychodoslovenska nizina Lowlands, Slovakia point the limiting effect of the large stock of soil water in the spring months and its deficit in the 2nd half of the vegetation period. The negative influence of the water excess in the beginning of the vegetation period manifests the most in the late sowing time of the spring crops, especially in the spring barley, the podders but also in the sugar beet and the maize. In dry and extremely dry years the limitary factor for the harvest is the long term drop of the soil moisture content, under values of the optimum water storage for plants. An important drop of the soil moisture content under optimum values in point of duration and absolute values arises also in the years with the precipitation depth at the level of the long term normal
