This report is a preliminary marketing study into the international market for mahi-mahi, also known as dolphin fish or dorado. It presents some background information relevant to assessing the potential of the species. This is a necessary precursor to the development of a domestic export industry. The study identified that there has been a limited world market for mahi-mahi. Even so, several factors suggest that the species has good commercial potential. Its rapid growth rate make it an attractive consideration for aquacultural development. Current major markets are USA, particularly Hawaii, and Japan and Thailand. These countries are also major fishers of the species. Demand has traditionally been met by local supply. There is evidence to suggest that demand is growing in the USA and Europe, and a similar trend could develop in Australia. This market appears to consider mahi-mahi to be a low grade fish. Although the majority of the catch occurs in Japan, mahi appears to be considered a low grade species in this market. In order to assess the feasibility of a domestic wild catch or farmed mahi-mahi industry, more information will need to be gathered.
