Photosynthetic activity and dry matter partitioning in maize (Zea mays L.) under different tillage techniques [Tuscany]

The research took place in 1991 at the E. Avanzi Interdepartmental Centre for Agro-Environmental Research of Pisa University, on a loamy soil which, since 1981, has been the seat of a long-term field experiment aiming at evaluating the influence of different kinds of tillage management on the production of different crops. Our research fits into this general project and takes into consideration the second year of corn continuous crop. Two tillage systems were considered and precisely conventional tillage with ploughing to a depth of 50 cm (A50) and minimum tillage (LM) with harrowing to a depth of 10-15 cm by means of a disk-harrow. In order to evaluate the dynamic effects of the microclimate on the amount of gas exchanges, measurements were taken both over the whole day and over a period of increasing water deficit. In parallel with this, crop growth and changes in the water content of the soil were examined. Measurements of the leaf water potential were taken in particular moments of the growing cycle
