Methods to reduce the amount of pesticides in plant production - a production engineering analysis

Reduction of pesticides in plant production today and in future is necessary due to ecological and economic demands. A production engineering analysis of weed control shows that further reduction of chemical plant protection is possible only by specific spot spraying of weed. For this, detection of weed is necessary. Detection by use of image analysis is possible but until the present time consuming. Detection of plants with optical sensors is developed but cannot distinguish between weed and field crops. Therefore, certain conditions have to be considered. The Institute of Production Engineering is engaged in testing and improving such an optical system both in a laboratory with simulated ambient light, soil and plants and in practice on the field. First experimental results lead to the hypothesis: A reduced amount of pesticides in field crops sown in wide or narrow rows is possible by use of an optical-sensor-system for weed detection and by specific spot spraying under consideration of economic thresholds.
