Английский. To evaluate water competition between Zea mays L. and Abutilon theophrasti Medicus, the two species were compared, in pure stand and in competition in the field. The plasticity of A. theophrasti allowed it to adapt leaf distribution in space and time to optimise light capture in relation to the competition. Maize showed lower vegetative plasticity which limited the capacity of adaptation in the intercropping. A. theophrasti did not cause any particular water stress to the crop. This can most likely be ascribed to the environmental characteristics and to the deep root systems of both species, which are easily able to reach the shallow water table. The yield loss caused by the weed is probably due to the shading effect on the crop during flowering and the subsequent grain filling period. As a consequence, the low crop biomass yield in competition with the weed is mainly due to a reduction in dry matter production in the ears

Al fine di valutare la competizione idrica tra Zea mays L. e Abutilon theophrasti Medicus, in due anni successivi si sono poste a confronto, in situazione di campo, le due specie in coltura pura ed in competizione tra loro. La plasticita' che caratterizza l'A. theophrasti le consente di adattare la distribuzione delle foglie nello spazio e nel tempo in modo da ottimizzare la cattura della luce in relazione alle condizioni competitive. Il mais presenta invece una minore plasticita' vegetativa che ne limita le capacita' di adattamento in condizioni di competizione. I parametri idrici rilevati (potenziali idrici fogliari, conduttanza stomatica, temperatura radiativa della canopy, potenziale idrico del terreno) indicano che l'A. theophrasti non ha causato un particolare stato di stress nella coltura. Tale situazione e' verosimilmente da ricondurre alle caratteristiche dell'ambiente di prova, in particolare alla profondita' di falda che non risulta mai particolarmente elevata. Il rilevante danno causato dalla malerba e' principalmente legato all'azione ombreggiante che essa esercita sulla coltura nella fase finale del ciclo vegetativo
