Research in low input cropping systems. Subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) as living mulch and green manure in the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) - sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) rotation. Pt.2

A two-year experiment was carried out to test the performance of a conventional cropping system (a wheat-sunflower rotation, which is common in Central Italy) in comparison with the same cropping sequence with subclover (Trifolium subterraneum L., cv "Mount Barker") as a living mulch in the wheat and as a green manure for the following sunflower. The subclover used as a living mulch in the wheat showed a good establishment and a good reseeding capacity, which allowed its plant density to be increased (+57%) in the wetter year in comparison with that recorded in the direct sowing condition. The subclover aboveground biomass ploughed in was largely influenced by the climatic conditions during the growing season. A positive correlation between the amount of subclover biomass ploughed in and the vegetative and productive characteristics of the sunflower was found. The subclover green manure also seems to positively influence the crop following the sunflower, i.e. the wheat with a subclover living mulch. In this case, the wheat overyielded (+9%) the wheat in pure stand, this performance being due to an improved tillering index, a larger number of seed per head and a higher 1000-seed weight

Nell'ambito di una ricerca poliennale, riguardante il confronto di un sistema colturale convenzionale di frumento-girasole con uno innovativo (frumento/trifoglio sotterraneo - girasole), vengono riferiti i risultati del secondo ciclo di rotazione sul frumento e maggiori dettagli sul comportamento delle specie durante il primo ciclo colturale. Il trifoglio utilizzato come "living mulch" nel cereale ha evidenziato un notevole adattamento alle condizioni di consociazione dando luogo, nell'annata piu' favorevole, ad una densita' di piante per autorisemina superiore del 57% a quella rilevata per la semina diretta. L'entita' della biomassa da sovesciare a beneficio del girasole e' risultata fortemente influenzata dall'andamento climatico sia in termini di quantita' totale che nel rapporto trifoglio/infestanti. Il girasole, comunque, ha manifestato incrementi positivi sulle rese soprattutto in funzione della quantita' di biomassa di trifoglio sovesciata. Il sovescio sembra inoltre dar luogo ad un effetto residuo che si manifesta sul cereale che segue il girasole
