In some vineyards of Southern Italy in 1987-1991, the following species of thrips: Thrips tabaci Lindeman, Drepanothrips reuteri Uzel, Anaphothrips spp., Melanthrips spp., Thrips spp. and Aelothrips fasciatus L., were observed. The most important of them, as to the number of captures and infested vineyards, were T. tabaci (67.7% of the total captures) and D. reuteri (27.4%). The two mentioned species were found in vineyards in different times of the year. T. tabaci was indeed very numerous during blooming (77.5% of capture as regard those total annual of the species). On the contrary, D. reuteri occurred in the vineyard all year long, but with clear fluctuations, having a peak as the grapes turn dark (44% of the captures) and a minimum presence during fruit-set (0.7% of the captures). T. tabaci damaged the fruit set of grapes, causing black spots surrounded by whitish haloes, rust on fruits and epicarp caps. D. reuteri damaged the leaves and the sprouts, causing little chlorotic areas with a brownish spot at the center; the leaves also turn bronze and fall. The real damage was nevertheless negligible because of the great mass of leaves characterizing the curtain rearing system of the vine and owing to the decimation of the thrips as a consequence of chemical treatments against insects and fungi. The most harmful thrips damage was observed on white table grape cultivars and particularly on the cv. Italia
