Standardised core and grab sampling schedules are based on criteria adopted more than 20 years ago that perhaps could be relaxed. Alternative sampling and testing schedules are defined and the implications of one such schedule for the precision of staple length, staple strength and predicted hauteur are examined. The further implications of combining lots tested to a lower precision than that provided by current standards are also examined. The extrapolation of this schedule to a commercial situation is considered with estimates made of the reduction in grab-sampling and staple-testing operations and in the number of sale lots if pre-sale combination of lots of sizes less than 10 bales applies. An industry review of the sampling and testing schedules is encouraged with the intent of permitting alternative practices or refining present procedures where their cost is not offset with corresponding technical benefits
