The role of crop and pasture legumes in rotations on duplex soils [review]

The supply of exogenous nitrogen required for optimum agricultural use of duplex soils is often provided by legumes grown in rotation with non-leguminous crops. A mathematical model of an integrated dryland agricultural system (MIDAS) is used to assess the impact of legumes on farm profitability, and to estimate the sensitivity of the system to choices of rotation. It is concluded that crop legumes, in particular, have a firmly established role in low rainfall regions and that substantial increases in both the productivity and legume content of pasture would be required to outperform rotations that include crop legumes.
