Traditional veterinary practice in Africa
1994
Bizimania, N.
Recently there has been a growing interest in the ways and means of traditional cures of animal diseases. This is due not only to the fear that valuable methods of healing may gradually vanish but also to the fact that industrially produced pharmaceutics may be too expensive for certain parts of a community or may not always be available. More and more people are convinced that self-help approaches in the form of traditional cures offer, in certain branches of medicine, a way out of the impasse by making use of resources available within the countries themselves. These are the considerations which have led to the present book. The first part contains a detailed presentation of traditional African methods of treatment and of Africans' views on diseases among domestic species of animals. In the second part there are various appendices, to make the first part easier to understand. For instance, in the first part only botanical namens of the plants are given, but farmers are unlikely to be familiar with them, so their local namens are given in the second part. Furthermore, a glossary of terms and a list of the local namens of diseases is added. Finally, several ethnic groups and languages are mentioned in the text, so they are later localized. It is to be stressed that none of the information given, unless explicitly stated, has been examined scientifically; rather it reflects the opinions of healers or stockowners. This book is written as simply as possible and is meant for anyone working with animals in Africa
