Transportation of North Queensland perishables - a situation analysis [horticultural crops]

A framework is provided for integration of services and facilities to suit the particular needs of the perishables industries of North Queensland which have considerable export potential. The concepts developed are aimed to stimulate further investigation of a number of issues of strategic benefit to Queensland's future economic development. Electrification of the rail link from Rockhampton to Townsville is proposed as the catalyst for integration and improvement to road and rail services. Justification for this development would necessitate substantial increases in northbound and southbound freight traffic. Concurrent development of Townsville as a major shipping port for general cargoes is proposed as the means to increase rail freight and to enable retention of a greater share of transport revenue from trade to and from Pacific rim countries. Cairns would remain primarily as a tourist destination and outlet for air cargoes of high value and highly perishable commodities. Realisation of production potential and favourable market opportunities for perishable products in North Queensland could be expected as a secondary benefit from the suggested infrastructure development.
