Genotype, sowing date and plant spacing influence on high-yielding wheat in southern New South Wales, 3. Potential yields and optimum flowering dates

Results of experiments with a range of genotypes under high-input management conditions, sown at 4 densities between April and August are analysed to evaluate potential yield (in particular, 'removing' the effects of lodging) and determine an optimum anthesis date. Predicted potential yields were up to 950 g per sq m.; reductions due to lodging up to 45 percent. The optimum anthesis period was between 22 September and 10 October. An ideotype for irrigated wheat is developed.
