Out of the family Cucurbitaceae represented by more than 825 species there are 5 species of economic importance in the temperate area - Cucumis sativus, C. melo, Cucurbita pepo, C. maxima and Citrullus lanatus. The isolation of C. sativus, C. sativus var. hardwicki and C. hystrix from other species, manifested by a different chromosome number, is a reason of their non-crossability. Two groups of wild Cucurbita species - mesophytic and xerophytic - are genetically very distinct. C. lundelliana (mesophytic) is highly compatible with wild and cultivated species. The cultivated C. moschata serves a genetical bridge to solve the problem of non-crossability with xerophytic species. A method of immature embryo culture following interspecific hybridization can be successfully applied too.
