Ecovalence of Sudetic population of European larch (Larix decidua)

A total of 53 European larch provenances from the Czech Republic are represented on provenance research plots with European larch established in various countries of Europe and USA (a total of 158 research plots). Out of this number, 33 units comprise autochthonous larch-trees of Sudetic origin or populations with high probability that the larch comes from Eastern Sudetes. These provenance research plots were established in different evironmental conditions at localities from 40 degrees 41' to 62 degrees 00' northern latitude, at heights of 90 to 1,500 m above sea level, with average yearly temperature from 4.4 to 12.0 degrees C, and yearly precipitation amount of 505 to 1,200 mm. The population of Sudetic provenances shows above-average height growth in most cases. A comparison of height growth documents that the populations of Sudetic larches exceed the experiment values by about 11 % on average. A large proportion of trees per population with slighly curved stems, or even with more clearly curved stems in some cases is a generally known characteristic of Sudetic larch populations. European larch is a forest species with relatively great adaptability - ecovalence, while within this species this applies particulary to the autochthonous population from the Eastern Sudetes in the Czech Republic
