The effect of intrauterine infusion of insemination dose with dead spermatozoa on litter size after fertile insemination of gilts

A single infusion of the mixture of boar semen antigens and diluent was used in gilts of the Large White breed for uterus sensibilization to increase the number of piglets born in the first litter; an infertile insemination dose was applied in estrus preceding the estrus with fertile insemination. Infertile and fertile insemination doses for experimental and control groups of sows were prepared at the same time, by dilution of semen from the same boars. Spermatozoa in infertile rates were killed by deep freezing to a temperature of -20 degrees C. There was not any significant difference in litter size (number of all piglets born: 9.38 vs 9.75; live-born piglets: 8.84 vs 8.82 - P0.05) nor in conception rate after 1st insemination (76.8 % vs 81.8 % - P0.05) between the group of experimental and control gilts, which were significantly older at 1st insemination and at farrowing (250.7 vs 258.9 days of age - P0.01, and 371.6 vs 378.2 days - P0.05). After elimination of the significant difference between the groups in age at 1st insemination and farrowing, no difference was found in fertility either (9.54 vs 9.83 all pigles, 8.82 vs 8.88 live-born piglets per litter - P0.05). There was a significant difference in conception rate after 1st insemination, with worse values for the experimental group (79.3 % vs 87.4 % - P0.05). Gilt culling due to reproductive disorders was explicitly dominant reason in both groups of gilts, but the difference between the experimental and control group was insignificant (P0.05).
