Response to the infection with barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) was studied in field trials with selected Czech spring wheat varieties, advanced breeding lines, and foreign cultivars. The intensity of the symptomatic response was classified according to a 1-9 scale at the phase of full flowering. The effect of virus infection on yield components was assessed after plant harvesting, when the susceptibility index was also determined. Correlation coefficients in the infection variant were statistically significant for grain yield, thousand grain weight, harvest index and the modified susceptibility index in all cases. The average 36.0 % reduction of grain yield after BYDV infection was mainly caused by the reduction of grain weight per ear (32.7 %). Somewhat less marked was the reduction of straw yield (27.5 %), and the lower reduction rates were recorded in plant height (7.3 %), ear number per plant (3.6 %), thousand grain weight (9.8 %) and harvest index (7.7 %)
