Soils in the south east region of New South Wales are in an exposed and fragile state. The region contains an incredible range of soil types most of which are susceptible to degradation. This is due to the shallow nature of the soils and the negligible rate of soil formation. Any loss of soil is of major concern to the long term viability and sustainability of agricultural production. The region is also a major water harvesting source servicing Sydney, Wollongong and Canberra as well as the southern irrigation area of New South Wales. These major catchments must be protected to ensure adequate water quality and quantity in future years. Papers presented at this seminar provided the background for a submission to the National Soil Conservation program, A REGIONAL APPROACH TO SUSTAINABLE SOIL MANAGEMENT AND LAND USE, to be conducted from 1992 to 1994.
