Effect of split nitrogen applications on the yield and protein content of dryland wheat in northern New South Wales

Experiments over 2 years compared urea drilled at various rates at sowing with foliar applications at tillering, booting stage, or both. Above ground dry weight and N uptake increased with increasing N application at all stages, but responses to applications after sowing were invariably less than those to the equivalent increases in N at sowing. Grain yield responded to N more in the moister season; again the yield responses to later applications were smaller than those to an equivalent extra amount of N at sowing; and responses were smaller when N was applied at booting rather than tillering. Post-sowing applications increased grain protein, more so at booting stage than at tillering.
