Reducing height and lodging in rapeseed with growth regulators

Ethrel, PP 333, cycocel, pix, and EL 500 were applied to bulky crops of 3 cultivars of rapeseed in central-western New South Wales. PP 333 and EL 500 were the most effective growth retardants, and without apparent phytotoxicity. Height reductions were enhanced at higher rates of application; reductions achieved ranged from 14 to 26 percent. Significant reductions in lodging resulted. In the tallest and most severely lodged variety, Jumbuck, yield increases were as high as 54 percent. The response in yield was due to practical considerations such as a compact pod canopy, uniform ripening, reduced shattering and more efficient harvesting rather than to physiological factors such as pod and seed set.
