Sward growth of monocultures and binary mixtures of phalaris, lucerne, white clover and subterranean clover under two defoliation regimes

Monocultures and mixtures were grown on cracking clay soils, irrigated between April and November, and cut at intervals of 4 and 8 weeks over 3 growing seasons at Scone NSW. The deep-rooted perennials dominated mixtures under infrequent cutting. Frequent cutting increased the contribution of clovers in mixtures, but reduced the vigour and density of lucerne, resulting in balanced mixtures with phalaris and subterranean clover by the third year. Only lucerne contributed large amounts of dry matter over summer. Regeneration of both clovers was better in monocultures than in mixtures with phalaris. In spring, growth in response to mean daily air temperature showed 2 distinct patterns, with peaks at about 15 deg. C for annual or dormant pastures, and about 18 deg. C for lucerne mixtures and pure white clover. In autumn, growth patterns were determined by the method of regeneration, seedlings or dormant crowns.
