Shoot apex sugars in relation to long-day induction of flowering in Lolium temulentum L.

Inflorescence initiation in Lolium temulentum is induced by a single long day with a photoperiod extension of 16 h under low photon flux density from incandescent lamps. Under these conditions the content of sucrose in the shoot apex fluctuates diurnally in the same way as in short day apices; although the fluctuation becomes more marked thereafter. Increasing the sugar supply to the apex by a number of in vivo and in vitro means did not lead to flowering in non-induced plants. However, when apices excised after initiation by long day leaves were cultured in vitro, the development of inflorescences was enhanced by increased sugar content. Floral evocation in L. temulentum does not require an increase in sucrose at the apex, though inflorescence development is highly responsive to it.
