The occurrence of 40 cases per annum on a Gippsland property allowed a survey and case-control study of the disease, which, it emerged, had significant differences under these grazing conditions to the disease as reported from housed cows in the Northern Hemisphere. Affected cows represented about 0.06 percent of the population. Most cases were diagnosed in the early lactation period. One sire could be identified as generating a disproportionately large number of affected cows. Affected cows were average producers in their herds, but being a member of a high-producing herd was a significant risk factor.
