Investigation and evaluation of the contamination of native and imported cereals with fumonisins

Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced from Fusarium moniliforme and Fusarium proliferum, which are frequently associated with maize but also were isolated from wheat, barley, oats and rye in south and middle Europe. Fumonisins show cancer-promoting activity in rats and possibly are carcinogenic to humans. They have been shown also to cause deseases in horses and pigs. The investigation of the fumonisin content of 400 randomly selected samples of wheat and rye, cultivated and harvested in the Federal Republic of Germany (1993), did not show any fumonisins. Maize, cultivated 1993 in Germany, has shown a low fumonisin contamionation. Maize imported from Argentina was often contaminated with fumonisins B1, B2 and rarely with fumonision B3.
