Rice research and development in the USA

The findings of a study tour of the major rice production areas in the United States of America is presented. Information was sought on various aspects of rice production which might have relevance to the north Queensland industry. Some major issues to be considered are: water-seeding, where red rice and-or grass weeds are a major problem; plant growth regulators to improve crop establishment in drill-seeded crops; new herbicides becoming available for residual control of both grass and broadleaf weeds; developing a rotation with soybeans, cotton or maize for controlling red rice; further testing in our environment of varieties such as Newbonnet, Alan, Lacassine, Rosemont and Dellmont; reducing water use in rice by such options as tailwater recovery; and harvesting at a grain moisture content below 16 percent, which would increase the likelihood of poor mill-outs.
