[Captation and conservation in situ of rainfall in corn of the valley of Apatzingan, Mich. Three years retrospective]

The Apatzingan valley has adequate conditions for corn production, however, irregular and scanty rainfall is a limitant factor; besides, the high environment evaporative demands results in crop losses and low grain yields. With this prevalent situation, the purpose of this work was to determine the best water conservation treatment and microwatershed size for corn grain yield. After three years comparing plastic mulch, manure, crop residues and soil compactation treatments for water conservation, and row widths as catchment area, besides regional irrigation and rainfed areas as controls. Results indicate that grain yield was higher with plastic mulch and with 0.80 m row width. Corn yields decreased as area increased. Catchment area must be between 0.80 and 1.20 m. Due to high rainfall during the last two years, only the first year of study there was response to water catchment in corn grain yield.

El valle de Apatzingan presenta condiciones propicias para el cultivo del maiz, sin embargo, una fuerte limitante es la escasa e irregular precipitacion que, combinada con la elevada demanda evapotranspirativa del medio, origina la perdida del cultivo y bajos rendimientos de grano. Ante esta situacion, los objetivos de este trabajo fueron determinar el mejor material de conservacion de agua y obtener el tamano optimo de microcuenca, para rendimiento de grano. Se trabajo en 3 anos de estudio con cobertura plastica, estiercol, rastrojo y compactacion, como materiales de conservacion de agua; distancias de surco como area de captacion, mas un testigo de riego y otro de temporal. Los resultados indicaron que el rendimiento de grano fue mayor con la cobertura plastica en los 3 anos y distancia de surco de 0.80 m. La produccion decrecio con el incremento del area de captacion por lo que el area debe fluctuar entre 0.80 y 1.2 m. Debido a las altas precipitaciones de los 2 ultimos anos, solo el primer ano se observo respuesta en rendimiento de grano a la captacion y conservacion de agua.
