Quality improvement of Zanzibar clove exports
1993
Williams, E.A.
Zanzibar's foreign exchange earnings from clove exports have declinde over the last five years from US$ 11 million in 1988/89 to US$ 3 million in 1991/92. With current world market prices now at 50 (or less) than those of 1991/92 financial year, foreign exchange earnings are likely to decline even further. Until Zanzibar is in a position to diversify into alternative cash crop products, adjustments in clove quality specifications need to be made, more stringent quality control regimes implemented and overall marketing efficiency improved (delivery of consignments on time) so that maximum revenue can be acquired from clove exports
