Several studies in eastern and Southern Africa have shown that losses during traditional drying and storage of maize are very high. Postharvest losses upto 40 have been recorded. It is possible to economically reduce the losses by using applied technology and management practices. This publication presents technical systems developed for small scale farms. Knowledge from development and testing work, literature has been compiled with practical and first hand knowledge based on traditional techniques and methods. These are discussed with merits and demerits. The system is socieconomically evaluated and recommendations on postharvest techniques and methods for different sizes of farms presented. This document deals with characteristics of maize grain and its effects on handling, storage, postharvest losses in maize, on-farm transportation, drying, shelling and control of storage pests using different methods. It also persents on-farm storage systems and methods, design and highlights on improved storage structures. Gives a summary of recommendations on postharvest technology
