Influence of planting densities on yield was studied on the Fruit Growing Center Maribor - Experimental Station Gacnik from 1992 to 1995. Cultivars 'Idared', 'Golden Delicious', 'Gloster', 'Jonagold' and its mutants and 'Elstar' and its mutants were planted in a single row system (2500, 5400, 6000 and 9000 trees/ha), double row system (16000), tree-row system (3200) and "V" shaped system (3200 and 18000 trees/ha respectively). With increasing planting densities yields per tree decreased whereas cumulative yields per hectare increased. Cumulative yields varied from 63,050 to 151,380 kg/hectare depending on planting density and cultivar. Mean number of fruits per tree also decreased with increasing planting densities. Mean fruit weight did not depend on planting density. Results show that yields achieved in orchards with planting densities up to 6,000 trees/ha enable cost effective production whereas yields achieved in orchards with higher planting densities are too low for cost effective production.
