The influence of spatial pattern of trees on the increment of stand

By combining a flexible single-stem orientated growth model with a stand structure generator, a simulation instrument is developed with which a broad range of stand structures can be generated and analyzed in its increment reaction typical for each structure. For the increment prognosis, a basal area increment model is elaborated which is the position-dependent and single-stem orientated. It includes - as interpretative items - the crown competition (KKL), the symmetry or asymmetry of the competitive effect (NDIST), and the position of the competitors (TALPHA); it is able to explain up to 87 per cent of the individual variations of the basal area increment in intensely structured uneven-aged mixed stands (model 1). Comparatively, a position-independent basal area increment model with the competitive index KKB characterizing the competitive situation of the single stems only by regarding the relative position in the vertical structure (model 2), and a model without considering the competitive effects (model 3) are developed.
