If the European market is also to become a reality as regards foodstuffs free trade must be guaranteed and quality assurance systems in line with EC regulations must also be introduced. This objective is helped along by the global concept of certification and testing, a strategy which, if consistently applied, threatens to upset European equilibrium because it puts consumers, medium-sized producers and public supervision at a disadvantage. What we need is to develop groups of companies that dominate the market and are self-controlling.
