The use of ILWIS for maize suitability assessment in catchment area

The need to store, analyze and display large amounts of complex data for environmental management has led to the development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS are becoming essential tools for analyzing data and disseminating knowledge of the world and are being used to assist in decision making. GIS achieve this by indicating various alternatives in development and conservation planning and modelling potential outcomes for a series scenarios. ILWIS (the Integrated Land and Water Information System) is a part of GIS tools, which is combination of computer hardware and software, that is capable of interacting entities both locational and non-locational properties. Nam Chun Catchment Area is tributary to Pa Sak Watershed of Phetchabun Province in Thailand, where rural and ecological problem exist: rapid deforestation, arable cropping on steep slope, occurence of severe erosion in places, flooding and sedimentation in valleys, and restricted possibilities of introducing sustained landuse. It is therefore envisioned in this assessment to identify area suitables for maize cultivation, that may solve if not minimize these problems. This study concludes that the use of GIS (by ILWIS) for maize suitability assessment is effective, but the occurence depends on the quality and consistency of the available data. In this assessment, the suitability is not complete as it based only on the erosion hazard, slope gradient, and landuse. These are only few parameters to consider.
