Anatomical variations and spore ultrastructures of Malaysian grass ferns: Schizaea digitata (Linn.) SW. and Schizaea dichotoma J.S.M.

Variations in the frond and rhizome anatomy of two Malaysian species of Schizaea Smith have been studied and documented. Characters used include the shape of vascular bundle, xylem configurations and distribution of parenchymatous tissues and tracheids in the pith region. In Schizaea digitata the xylem configuration is C-shaped, and phloem cells and parenchymatous tissue are found on the inner side of the xylem arc, whilst in S. dichotoma the xylem is T-shaped, and phloem cells are concentrated on both ends of the xylem arc. The pith of the rhizome of S. dichotoma is filled with masses of tracheids and parenchymatous tissue whilst in S. digitata the pith is made up of only the latter.
