Off-season cucumber, cauliflower, tomato and normal season onion and shallot variety and management research for the hills during 1992-1995

Commercial vegetable research is an important component in the Horticulture Section research programme at Lumle Agriculture Research Centre and is conducted in a range of agro-ecological zones (400-2200m) both on and off-stations. Research activities conducted over the years 1992-95 on cucumber, cauliflower, onion, shallot and tomato are summarised. In cucumber, productive life and yield increased with split nitrogen applications but fruit curvature did not improve in response to different time and frequency of pollination in off-season production. In cauliflower, variety Kibo Giant has been found better for late season (April) production. A large genetic variation has been tested in local shallot collection and some lines have better performance under organic manuring screening compared to exotic hybrid shallots. Exotic onion varieties like Equanex, Regel PVP, Rio Foji Red, Granoble and Early Red have been found better yielding compared to Red Creole and Mallajh Local at a range of sites. However, for storability and yield Early Red was better. Weed competition in the early stage of onion crop is very severe and multiple and early weeding is very important for economic weed management. From an onion international nursery, a few early varieties are identified and if these varieties mature before monsoon season in the hills, they can be stored safely. Heat and bacterial wilt tolerant new accessions over CL-1131 have been identified from tomato experiment which found that bacterial wilt tolerant in tomato is biovar specific.
