The use of photointerpretation of aero-photographs and GIS techniques in mapping and studying of forest vegetation

In the past the vegetation of Slovenian forests was mapped on different scales. For the entire Slovenian forest area only one map was elaborated on a scale of 1 : 100 000, which is insufficient for the present needs. With the development of techniques several new possibilities of vegetation studying and mapping have become possible. Various ways of dealing with vegetation by way of the photointerpretation of aero-photographs and GIS techniques in combination of terrain inventories are the issue of this article. Some of these procedures are shown on the example of a water accumulation area of one of the tributary streams of the Moenik brook at Ko-evska Reka. In the research object - selected for integral monitoring of the impacts of polluted air on ecosystems in Slovenia - terrain analyses were used in combination with photo-interpretation of aero-photographs in selecting stand types, the basic vegetation units, in the delimitation of preserved stands from the changed ones, in the studying of relief and hydrological conditions. A spatial information system, which includes various data levels, has been worked out for the object, too.
