[Evolution of the compaction and of the permeability of soils cultivated with oil palms in Monagas State. 1995]

In order to evaluate the evolution of some physical parameters from acid soils cultivated with oil palm (Elaies guineensis Jacq), a study was conducted in the commercial plantation located in the "El Zamuro" lot, Maturin municipality of Monagas State within an agreement of technical cooperation between PALMONAGAS Company and FONAIAP. The study evaluated the resistance to penetration as an indicative of the grade of soils compactation, realized using a penetrometer; also the soils permeability was evaluated through infiltrometer cylindres. There were evaluated four geomorphological areas: High-plain terrace, Medium-plain terrace, Low-plain terrace and Recent flood plain, taking as reference a survey realized in 1987 and the actual conditions of non-cultivated lots, located at the same area. The susceptibility of the Low-plain terrace and the Medium-plain terrace to the compactation was determinated, it was represented by an increase in the values of resistance to penetration within 15 and 30 cm of depth. For the same areas, a decrease in the soils permeability was detected, establishing a close relation among the following factors: agronomic management-compactation-water movement. It is prominent the excellences of the Recent flood plain for the oil palm cultivation crop. Also there are presented recommendations for the management of the crop in other geomorphological areas.
