Game Damage Prevention Concept for the Canton of Glaris (Switzerland)

The present situation in the forests of the canton of Glaris calls for a cantonal concept for the prevention of game damage. As part of forest management planning such a concept is an essential part of any submission projects for special protection forests on the one hand and applications for federal contributions for game damage prevention on the other hand. Measures are proposed to be taken in the fields of game management, habit improvement, and traditional protection. The natural regeneration situation is taken as a standard measure for game regulation. Regular surveys of the game damage and regeneration situation in the forests of the canton of Glaris provide the necessary data for working out an ecologically sound hunting plan. A cantonal game damage survey is made every three to four years, assessing the spatial distribution of the damage. Random sampling in special areas provides information on the annual development of game damage. Efficient game damage prevention is the goal to be reached in stages of three to four years in the following sectors: hunting, forestry, agriculture, nature conservation, tourism, spatial planning, and traditional protection with corresponding sectional goals. The measures to be taken are also the subject of separate plans. Once the cantonal government has sanctioned the concept, work on the individual measures can be started. A concept working group was set up by the government to take in hand and coordinate the proposed measures. The group consists on one representative each of the cantonal forest service (chairmanship), the departments for game management, agriculture, environment, construction and building (spatial planning) and economic promotion (tourism). The game damage prevention concept shows that the forest can fulfil their function only if the natural environment of the canton as a whole is at the same time more highly valued
