The joint Sri Lankan-German Smallholder Integrated Livestock Extension Project (SILEP) started in March 1993. It has the long-term objective of supporting smallholders in Uva and Southern Province in making better use of the potential for crop-livestock integration and thereby increasing the households' income. As the project is in its orientation phase the purpose of this study was to gain information about the target population in Uva Province. It should cover the main household systems and their production systems, the needs and interests of the farmers regarding crop-livestock integration, and identify a potential and possible measures for the integration. The theoretical concept of the study is based on the principles of the "Farming Systems Analysis". Crop-livestock integration in the context of this study is defined as the flow of products between crop and livestock enterprises. The findings presented in this srudy are based on eight case studies. Two teaestates, four traditional villages and two settlements in Uva Province were chosen, covering the main agro-ecological zones. The core instrument to develop and implement sustainable measures together with the villagers is the Participatory Extension Approach. The experience made with Rapid Rural Appraisal was overall quite positive.
