The paper deals with the follow-up of mutagenic hazards posed by selected mycotoxins (ochratoxin A, patulin, penicillic acid). These substances originate in foodstuffs as products of contaminating by microfungi. Mutagenic activity was assessed by the Ames test on two strains of Salmonella typhimurium (TA98 a TA100), and at low doses (approximating 0.1 LD50) by the micronucleus test in the eucaryotic model (mouse). In the Ames test there has been detected no mutagenic activity either with or without metabolic activation in ochratoxin A, patulin or penicillic acid. In the micronucleus test ochratoxin was mutagenic at the highest doses only, penicillic acid was markedly mutagenic, and patulin was not mutagenic at all.
