Effect of ditch on sweet potato production in Koya Barat, Jayapura

An experiment on the effect of ditch on sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) production was carried out in Koya Barat Jayapura in 1994/95. Split plot design with three replications was used two local varieties from Maros and Sentani as the main plot system (one plant/ditch, long ditch, and flat system) as subplot. The size of plot was 9 x 10 m, one stek/hole with spacing and ditch 40 cm x 40 cm. The result showed that using introduced variety with flat sytem without ditch yielded 25.5 t/ha, while local variety at both of ditches yielded only 6.2 to 11.3 t/ha. Introduction of new variety can increase sweet potato production regardless of using ditch
