The efficiency of high analysis nitrogen sources in irrigated and rainfed lowland rice production in Malawi has not been tested. The change from low analysis nitrogen fertilizers to high analysis SON therefore lacked rich backing. Experiments to compare the perfomance of Urea, Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) and Sulphate of Ammonia (SA) were conducted from 1990 to 1993. The trial under irrigayion was conducted at Lifuwu, Mkondezi, Hara, Lufilya, Domasi and Kasinthula rice schemes and the rainfed sites were Matera,Mwangulukulu, Mkondezi and Khanda.
