Influence of fertilization on the colour of gladiolus spikes [Piedmont]

A previously started investigation on the effect of fertilization treatments, based on nitrogen (ammonium nitrate, 35%) and potassium (potassium sulphate, 50%), on the colour of gladiolus spikes, has been extended to cv. Fidelio (violet), Red Beauty (red) and Gold Field (yellow). The trials have been carried out from May to September at the Experimental Field of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Torino, located at Carmagnola (40 km from Torino). The soil has been disinfected with basamid one month before the setting up of the bulbs. Two rates of nitrogen and potassium (40 and 80 g/** (2)) were added on 40 x 40 randomized plots. Weeding and irrigation were carried out during the experiments. The colour has been determined by tristimulus colorimetry, evaluating L*, a*, b*, C* and H* parameters. The effects of treatments were function of the nature of fertilizers and their rates, and of the cv. hue. According to individual treatments it has been possible (i) to minimize the colour variation compared to the check spikes, or (ii) to modify the colour of the spikes in relation to consumer's demand

E' stata effettuata una indagine sull'effetto di trattamenti di concimazione a base di azoto e di potassio sul colore delle spighe fiorali di gladioli delle cv. Fidelio, Red Beauty e Gold Field. Il colore e' stato determinato con le tecniche della colorimetria tristimolo, valutando i parametri L*, a*, b*, C*, H*. I risultati ottenuti provano che gli effetti apportati dalle varie quantita' di concime variano in funzione delle dosi stesse, del prodotto impiegato e del tono cromatico della cultivar in esame. Si evidenzia la possibilita' di minimizzare la variazione di colore rispetto al testimone non concimato accanto a quella di modificare, in funzione delle esigenze del mercato, il colore dei fiori
