Concerning in vitro mutation breeding, various in vitro culture techniques will be used involving local clones and reference cultivars. Entire plants of banana and plantain may be regenerated from triploid clones through a process of somatic embryogenesis. Radiation effects, polyploidy induction, and somaclonal variation will be investigated in various tissue-culture systems. Genetic markers to identify correlation between morphological and agronomical traits are being developed. Mutation breeding technology will be introduced into cross-breeding programs. Concerning training and transfer of technology, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Austria, offers fellowship training related to different aspects of Musa biotechnology and molecular biology for transfer to breeding institutions. IAEA could, in collaboration with other agencies, initiate an interregional course on Musa improvement. Concerning genetic transformation, IAEA proposes, in collaboration with other institutions, to develop gene transformation systems in local, well adapted clones.
