Trace element studies of Turkish soils began in the early 1970s and have continued increasing since then. The current study is based on the analyses of 1511 soil samples. The results indicate that 50 percent of Turkish soils are deficient in Zn, 27 percent are deficient in Fe, and less than 1 percent are deficient in Mn. The level of Cu seems adequate. Since yield barriers are almost reached, emphasis should now be given to trace elements and related problems so that these are not the yield-limiting factors either in Turkey or in the West Asia-North Africa (WANA) region in general. The WANA region countries that have similar soil and climate characteristics as Turkey are likely to have potentially similar trace element problems
