Plant- and Food Biotechnology: an opportunity for Suriname's agricultural sector?

Biotechnology, a modern discipline that evolved from major advances in cell- and molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics, could contribute to an increase in production capacity and development of processing techniques of local crop commodities in developing countries. The positive and negative impacts of biotechnology on developing countries are reviewed. The requirements for the extensive adoption of biotechnology as a tool for sustainable agricultural development in countries like Suriname are discussed. In conclusion, issues are discussed regarding the key role the Faculty of Technology could and should play in the adoption proces of biotechnological techniques in Suriname

Biotechnologie, een moderne discipline geevolueerd uit de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in de cel- en molekulaire biologie, biochemie en genetica, zou een wezenlijke bijdrage kunnen leveren aan de economische groei van ontwikkelingslanden middels het faciliteren van produktieverhoging van lokale gewassen en het ontwikkelen van alternatieve gewassen als voedselbron. In dit artikel worden de positieve en negatieve effecten van biotechnologie op ontwikkelingslanden aangehaald. Aanvullend hierop worden de voorwaarden voor het adopteren van biotechnologie als instrument ter verbetering van de agrarische ontwikkeling in ontwikkelingslanden als Suriname besproken. In conclusie, wordt aangegeven welke sleutelrol de Fakulteit der Technologische Wetenschappen kan en moet spelen in dit adoptie proces
