[The wood sector and sustainable development of Suriname: A study of the wood industry]

Английский. The intention of this study was to find an answer to the central question: what is the contribution of the production and processing of lumber to the sustainable development of Suriname? In this, sustainable development means the increase in and the spreading of welfare, and the increasing participation of the population in various aspects of the community, in which the capacity of the earth to also provide for the basic needs in the future is maintained. This study was carried out by way of the description of the characteristics of the lumber industry of Suriname, and the analysis of the social, economic and ecological consequences of the lumber exploitation. The lumber industry consists mostly of small saw-mills and it is dominated by a large saw-mill, namely the BSH ("Bruynzeel Suriname Houtmaatschappij"). The commercial lumbering in Suriname is approximately 0.17 per cent yearly of the total forest area of 14.8 million ha. Furthermore, yearly circa 17.000 ha forest is lost because of shifting cultivation. The harvesting damage can be significantly reduced by applying ecologically justified lumber harvesting systems. The CELOS Management System provides a good perspective for sustainable forest management. It is expected that Suriname's role on the international lumber market will increase and that the export of lumber will keep on increasing. Sustainable forest management is therefore recommended

De intentie van deze studie was middels het beschrijven van de kenmerken van de houtindustrie van Suriname en het analyseren van wat de sociale, economische en ecologische gevolgen zijn van de houtexploitatie antwoord te vinden op de centrale vraag: welke bijdrage levert de winning en verwerking van hout aan de duurzame ontwikkeling van Suriname waarbij onder duurzame ontwikkeling wordt verstaan: groei van de welvaart, spreiding van de welvaart en de toenemende participatie van de bevolking aan de verschillende aspecten van de samenleving, waarbij de capaciteit van de aarde om eveneens in de toekomst te voldoen in de basisbehoeften blijft behouden. Deze studie werd uitgevoerd middels het beschrijven van de kenmerken van de Surinaamse houtindustrie, en het analyseren van de sociale, economische en ecologische gevolgen van de houtwinning. De houtindustrie bestaat voornamelijk uit kleine zaagmolens, en het wordt gedomineerd door een grote zaagmolen, namelijk de BSH (Bruynzeel Suriname Houtmaatschappij). De commerciele houtwinning in Suriname is jaarlijks ongeveer 0.17 procent van het totale bosareaal van 14.8 millioen ha. Verder gaat als gevolg van de zwerflandbouw jaarlijks plusminus 17000 ha bos verloren. De oogstschade kan aanzienlijk afnemen indien men ecologisch verantwoorde houtoogstsystemen hanteert. Het CELOS management biedt goede perspectieven voor de management van duurzame hout productie. Het is te verwachten dat Suriname een steeds grotere plaats zal innemen op de internationale houtmarkt.
