In the paper, the mechanical and rheological properties, and the microstructure of the starch-glycerine blend prepared by a single-screw-extruder have been studied. The experiments prove that glycerine can be added to starch as a plasticizer to improve the processing characteristics of starch and make it thermoplastic. Considering the rheology of the blend under different temperatures, the activation energy of the fluid of the blend to be 122.5 KJ/mol were calculated. With the increasing content of the glycerine, the apparent viscosity of the melt and glass transition temperature (DSC analysis) both decline. The SEM analysis also demonstrates that glycerine can help destroy the granular structure of the starch during extrusionand turns it into a thermoplastic material.
