Winter barley is cultivated in the Czech Republic on the surface 150,000-200,000 ha. It represents about 10 % of the total area of cereal cultivation, and 30 % from the total area of barley cultivation. Six-rowed barley is cultivated on 80 % of the total area of winter barley and manifests higher yield potential than two row winter barley and higher winter hardiness. On the contrary, two-rowed winter barley dominates in higher 1000 grain weight, higher protein content and lower fibre content. In the Czech Republic two-row winter barley is not used for malting purposes.
