Effect of summer pruning on growth and fruiting of sweet cherry trees (Prunus avium L.)

Cherry trees of Merton Premier and Buttner's Red cultivars grafted on F 12/1 rootstock were planted at the distance of 4.4 x 4.0 m, and trained as a hedgerow with 6 main limbs on each tree. Summer pruning was performed from the third year onward either in last week of June, in the middle of July, or at the beginning of August to restrict tree spread. Sweet cherry trees with shoots headed in June were the largest and the most dense. They set the lowest number of floral buds and produced the smallest fruits. The trees with shoots headed in July had better yields but fruits were smaller than on trees pruned in August. Shoot heading in August gave the best results, restricting canopy size and providing a satisfactory yield of good quality fruits
